Historical Clip Discussion #1: Melaswen Cliffhanger

Hi everyone, since we won't be having daily threads during the Olympics, we're going to be posting a historical Days clip for discussion each weekday. I hesitate to use the term 'classic clip' since some of these might not exactly be what we'd call classics! We'll try to do a variety of clips, spanning as many years and characters as possible.

For the first clip, we've selected something with ties to today's show. Enjoy! And Discuss!

While I have a minute, I Just want to say that this story was moronic. However, I like that the cliffhanger had a lot of different angles. It wasn't just who will die. It was they kissed, what's doing to happen? It was, will they be rescued? It was what will happen to the baby? There were life and death stakes but there were also family stakes, relationship stakes, and anticipation of reunions. I was pretty frustrated by the show at this time and was ready for the two week break and while I thought all these stories were dumb, I was genuinely curious about how everything would pan out. It panned out pretty stupidly, lol.

LOL...although super cheesy, at least it looked 100xs better then whats on now. The first part of the clip reminded me of the Land of the Lost and their cheesy effects.

I had to laugh at the FB of J&J adventures of the past...the catwalk...then watch this current crap..OH DAYS

Oh, of course there has to be at least one shirtless guy...good times!

Second clip:

LOL @ BOPE and their mental telepathy...good times. Was this the last time Roman got some? And after they were rescued, was this the time that Marlena was supposedly preggers? I say supposedly because I never believed she was pregnant...menopause, yes...baby, no.

Josh Taylor is hilarious in those scenes. But the best part of that cliffhanger was not in the clips, Bo walking in on John and Kate followed by a very long on the next preview.

Yeah, this was a rather moronic story, but, as moronic as the situation was, I cared about a lot of these people. I was annoyed that Patrick delivered Jack and Jennifer's baby, but at least Jennifer was fantasizing about the right guy. Man, I thought this stuff was lame, but it actually looks pretty darn good when compared to the last few years. Ouch.

OK, please don't throw daggers at me, but I actually liked Chris, I mean Roman, er Winston, in those clips. Yes, it was cheesy but he seemed to be acting. What a concept.

Ah yes Melaswen, the storyline that made me a fan. It'll always be special to me, because I remember watching and thinking "what? this is a soap!" I was glued to the TV all summer waiting for all the captives to make it home to their families.

The force field bit is still funny to look at though.

How the hell could Roman's foot be infected already? He just hurt it like an hour ago (assuming Hope and Abe are in the same time dimension). I know, I know....don't ask questions....

Gone, But Not Forgotten!

I liked this crazy SL, rooting couples, danger, mystery, adventure, twists & turns and sets outside of Salem. The good old DAYS! Oh what I would give to get 1/10th of that drama back on screen.

Ugh. Don't even talk talk to me about Fauxman getting her pregnant. I do love the fact that Dee used a body double for that scene though.

IA, that was just YUCK all around! Roman still having swimmers to impregnate a woman clearly in menopause. I just remember thinking, huh, the woman's 50! I thought it was one of those hysterical pregnancies! LOL

I wouldn't have been grossed out at all if it had been John that got her pregnant. I'm surprised they only have one, with as much as they do it. lol

I wasn't watching DAYS when this was on, so I had to brush up on my DAYS history via Wikipedia to see what was going on.

I am glad that they haven't had an intimate scene with Josh Taylor recently. No offense to his fans, I just thought the way he was making out with Deirdre, the way he kissed and everything was a turn off in a major way for me.

The forcefield effects were pretty sorry, but I thought the blood looked realistic enough.

I liked the adventure and mystery aspect of these clips.

Wikipedia said that Patrick was hired by E.J. to kill Hope. Why was E.J. wanting to kill Hope?

Thanks for posting, Ellie!

It wasn't Dee. It was a body double. That's why you only the see the "persons" hands and feet. You don't see her face. ;)

I thought the body double was just used in the castle.

Remember how many times Jack and/or Jennifer were literally hanging off cliffs at the end of an episode? That's what stands out to me about Melaswen (or, as I call it, the stupid neverending kidnapping bullshit, 'cause it got ridiculous there).

It's almost too bad they can't pull this explosion out into a longer storyline like that was. Well, not exactly like that was, but with a few weeks devoted to buildup, disaster, and recovery.

That's mostly what I remember, too. I was always babysitting my niece and nephew that summer, and every time my niece would walk in, Jennifer would be hanging from a different cliff. I was so sure JJ was going to be born while she was hanging, and then he'd just be hanging there, too.

I was like 10 years old when the Melaswen story was going on, and, it blew my mind. I had no idea it was going to happen!! I thought it was the best thing ever & I bragged about it to people at my school. LOL. Watching clips of it now, it isn't as great

Kind of off-topic but this also reminds me of the hardest time I ever cried while watching DAYS: When Marlena got shot on the prison rooftop. OMG :(

Thanks for sharing, Ellie!
